What are Skin Cancer Screenings?

Skin cancer screenings, also referred to as full body skin exams to evaluate for skin cancer, are pivotal in early detection and prevention. At Donnelley Dermatology, DR. Donnelley conducts extremely thorough skin checks to identify potential issues. These annual skin checks are essential for catching any abnormalities early. Through visual inspection and sometimes additional diagnostic tools, such as dermoscopy, we meticulously examine the skin for any irregularities or concerning growths. By detecting skin cancer early, we can increase the likelihood of successful treatment outcomes and minimize the need for skin cancer surgery.

How do you prepare for a Skin Cancer Screenings?

Before your skin cancer screening, ensure you remove any makeup or nail polish to facilitate a thorough examination. You will be undressed and given a gown.  It’s essential to discuss any concerns or areas of interest during the appointment. At Donnelley Dermatology, we aim to make your skin screening process as seamless and comfortable as possible. Remember to bring any relevant medical history, biopsy reports or information about previous skin conditions or treatments to your annual skin check appointment.

Why are Skin Cancer Screenings performed?

Skin cancer screenings are performed to detect any early signs of skin cancer or suspicious lesions. Early detection is key to successful treatment outcomes. With regular screenings, potential skin cancer can be identified and addressed promptly. At Donnelley Dermatology, we prioritize preventive care through annual skin checks for patients of all ages. We believe that proactive skin health management is essential for maintaining overall well-being and reducing the need for skin cancer removal procedures. By staying vigilant and undergoing regular screenings, patients can take proactive steps towards protecting their skin and overall health.

What can you expect during Skin Cancer Screenings?

During a skin cancer screening at Donnelley Dermatology, your dermatologist will conduct a thorough examination of your skin from head to toe. They will carefully examine any moles, lesions, or areas of concern. Dr. Donnelley uses advanced techniques and technology to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. Throughout the examination, your dermatologist will communicate any findings and answer any questions you may have. The goal is to provide you with peace of mind and actionable insights into your skin health.

What is the followup like for Skin Cancer Screenings?

Following your skin cancer screening, Dr. Donnelley will discuss any findings with you and provide recommendations for further evaluation or treatment if necessary. If suspicious lesions are identified, additional testing or a biopsy may be recommended. Most patients can resume their normal activities immediately after a screening, with no downtime. However, if further intervention is needed, your dermatologist will outline the next steps and provide guidance on post-procedure care. At Donnelley Dermatology, our team is dedicated to supporting you throughout your skin health journey.

What are the potential costs for Skin Cancer Screenings?

The cost of a skin cancer screening can vary depending on factors such as time needed for the exam (for example, a patient with 100-200 moles will take longer), and any additional tests or procedures performed during the screening. At Donnelley Dermatology, we strive to provide accessible and affordable care to all our patients. While we don’t contract with any insurance companies, we will give you the necessary paperwork to submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.  Please note that Medicare does not allow submission for reimbursement, but all Medicare patients receive a 10% discount at Donnelley Dermatology.

What are the potential risks for Skin Cancer Screenings?

Skin cancer screenings are generally safe and non-invasive, with minimal risks involved. In rare cases, a biopsy may be recommended for further evaluation of suspicious lesions, which carries a very small risk of bleeding and infection.  The scar will usually be very small. However, the benefits of early detection far outweigh the potential risks. It’s essential to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about the screening process with DR. Donnelley beforehand. She can provide you with personalized information and guidance to help you feel confident and informed about your skin health journey.

Are there related procedures to Skin Cancer Screenings?

Related procedures to skin cancer screenings include skin cancer removal, also known as skin cancer surgery, and skin biopsy to remove skin lesions for further evaluation. It is also common to require freezing with liquid nitrogen to destroy precancerous growths. These procedures may be recommended if suspicious lesions are identified during a screening or for patients with a higher risk of developing skin cancer. At Donnelley Dermatology, we offer a comprehensive range of services to meet all of your skin health needs. Whether you require additional testing or treatments, we are here to provide personalized care and support every step of the way.
